Workshop on Financial Management & 
Social Accountability 

The Workshop on Financial Management and Social Accountability for Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) is held annually at Visthar, Bangalore. Over the last 12 years, this programme has been well-received among NPOs and charitable organisations in India.

Objectives of the workshop

  • To enable participants to understand and learn concepts and tools of financial management and evolve systems for financial planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  • To create awareness of the latest provisions of taxation laws (Income Tax, GST etc.,) and FCRA as applicable to NPOs.
  • To strengthen skills and confidence in integrating finance and operations effectively.
  • To create awareness of social accountability and internal control mechanisms.

Finance and programme administrators and executives of NPOs and charitable organizations in India.

Facilitators

Practicing chartered accountants, cost and management accountants and programme directors with vast experience in NPOs.

Programme schedule

Day 1: Overview of financial management and governance, crucial issues in managing finance, SWOT analysis, integrating financial management with programme management.
Day 2: Financial planning and budgeting, approaches to budgeting, cash flow forecast, gender budgeting.
Day 3: Accounting systems, fund accounting, legal treatment of project grants, accounting standards as applicable to NPOs, analysis of financial statements and disclosures and financial health check.
Day 4: Social accountability, social audit, and internal control systems and mechanisms.
Day 5: Taxation (Direct and indirect), FCRA, 2010, case studies and open forum on legal matters.

  • Salient features of GST Act.
  • Understanding CSR under the new provisions of company law.
  • Recent changes in FCRA law and practical issues in FCRA and rules thereon.
  • Update on tax laws.

Methodology

The methodology includes lecture sessions, individual and group exercises and discussions, role plays, case studies, and practical problem-solving activities.

The course fee is Rs.9000/- (rupees nine thousand only). This covers course fees, materials, boarding and lodging expenses. For non-residential participants, the fee is Rs. 5000/- (rupees five thousand only).
