A Co-creator deeply woven into the emergence of Visthar, Mercy Kappen has made significant contributions toward its pedagogical foundation, organizational culture, and collective journey since its inception. Following a decade as Executive Director, she continues to guide Visthar’s long-term orientation, conceptual frameworks, and institutional spirit as a Trustee and Strategic Advisor.
With over four decades of experience as a feminist educator, activist, and practitioner, Mercy is a recognized authority in gender, diversity, and social transformation. Her work sits at the intersection of experiential learning, systemic power analysis, and intersectional approaches to social justice. Over the decades, she has conceptualized and spearheaded pioneering educational initiatives, including the International Course on Gender, Diversity, and Social Transformation (GDST), alongside community-empowerment programs centered on child rights, gender justice, and constitutional values.
Mercy specializes in designing and facilitating capacity-building processes that mainstream gender, intersectionality, and diversity across civil society organizations, academic institutions, and humanitarian agencies. Her facilitation style seamlessly bridges structural analysis with participatory, experiential learning. Her international work as a trainer, curriculum developer, and consultant spans South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Southern Africa—including serving as visiting faculty at the Grail Centre in Cape Town, South Africa for the Training for Transformation diploma program, as well as facilitating gender mainstreaming processes for the Asia-Pacific Alliance of YMCAs and the Federation of African Women in Media (FAWM) in Zimbabwe.
In recognition of her lifelong contributions to gender justice and transformative education, Mercy was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Henry Martyn Institute in 2026.
